How iron effects hair:

Iron in Well Water: Iron is usually found in well water, in areas which have concentrations of iron in the ground. Concentrations of iron will slowly cause your hair to color to become darker. Iron can also add weight to your hair, and prevent proper chemical processing (changing hair color perming or straightening results).  Iron will change your  hair color. Usually light-colored hair turns orange and darker colored hair become darker with red highlights. Oxidized iron actually functions as an oxidizer in your hair.
